Thunder Bay’s Trevor Zimak and Glenn Leroux combined to win their fourth Atikokan Bass Classic title last week, bringing in a two-day total of 40.79 lbs.
The champs were the only pair to weigh in twenty pound bags both days, with 20.45 lbs on Friday and 20.24 lbs on Saturday. There were six twenty-poundders on Friday, with Cole and Jason Mattson leading the way with 21.73 lbs, about an ounce more than Jeff Veenbaas and Jim Ferguson (21.67 lbs).
Big bags were a little scarcer on Saturday, with just two other pairs making that weight. Mike Wilson and Zack McBride got to spend almost three hours as leaders Saturday when they brought in a 20.35 lb catch, the biggest of the day. They were thirteenth after Friday fishing. Chris Warren and Chris Horde had the only other one; their 20.26 lbs moved them up from 52nd place to thirteenth.
Two pairs with twenty pounders on Friday slipped out of the top tem – Aaron and Kim Wiens of Atikokan (20.12 and 15.20, good for eleventh), and Terry Allan and Bob Calder of red Gut Bay (20.14 and 11.46, thirtieth overall).
Defending champions Travis Schallock and Dany Michel of Nakina placed thirtieth, with 30.62 lbs.
Zimak and Leroux won the title in 2015 (41.51 lbs), 2012 (40.25 lbs), and 2009 (42.08 lbs). They were the runners-up in 2008. Leroux has been fishing the Bass Classic since the first event in 1991 on Nym Lake, and has partnered with Zimak since 2008. Now, the two typically compete in five (Fort Frances, Nakina, and Shebandowan Bass, and the Geraldton Walleye) regional tournaments per year.
