CHAMPS Coaches Ryan Bryk and Brad Gascoigne flank the 2016-17 NorWOSSA senior boys volleyball champions, the AHS Voyageurs: (front) Davis Mullner, Eric Williams, Cole Krassey, Aidan Labossiere, and Reed King; (back) Parker Sampson, Omega Lemieux, Cole Kaus, John Ribey, Kyler Gannon, and Zandre DeGagne.

The senior boys turned in a dominating performance November 10 to sweep the QEII Warriors and claim their third straight NorWOSSA title. The Warriors, who bested Ignace in a five-set semi-final Wednesday, had no answers for the Vs power attack, falling 25-14, 25-12, 25-12.

Atikokan hosts the NWOSSAA championship Thursday and Friday this week, as Manitouwadge HS and ES Laverndrye come to town for a double knock-out round-robin. (Once a team loses two matches, it is eliminated.) The Voyageurs will face Laverendrye at 10 am and Manitouwadge at 6 pm on  Thursday (the two visiting teams will play at 2 pm). Play resumes Friday with the top two teams meeting at 9:30 am, and, if necessary, again at 2 pm.

The junior boys team, third place during the regular season, fell in straight sets to QEII in that NorWOSSA semi-final. Rainy River bested the Warriors in the final. Both girls basketball finals went down to the wire: QEII beat Red Lake 34-33 in senior, and St. Thomas Aquinas beat Rainy River 37-35 in junior.

Kyler Gannon turns back a kill attempt against Ignace in the final season match, as Cole Krassey (a8) and Eric Williams look on.
